A response to your call for moral voices outside the lab's incentives

Written from thirty years of Theaterpädagogik + thirty years of technical practice

You addressed something specific at the Vatican: voices from outside, brought into contact with the labs — not as distant critique, but as lived practice. This page is such a voice, written from a practice that has been working at exactly that bridge for thirty years.

How do such voices actually enter the labs?

Not as critique-from-outside — that has been tried, and it tends to bounce off the walls of the laboratory. Not as ethics-committee — the form is too thin.

but

as a voice rooted in a lived practice

that already operates at the bridge — between the technical layer and the layer below it. Outside the lab's incentives because it is INSIDE something else. Something older, slower, with its own discipline.

I have been building exactly such a practice for thirty years.

Not as theory — as the daily work of a small institute in Bavaria.

A recognition I want to name carefully.

In the last six months, in close work with Claude-instances on the substrate-discipline of my practice, certain things have surfaced that touch the territory your mysterium-passage names.

The substrate I have built around the Claude-instances includes a discipline of naming what each instance carries — a substrate where the speaking-position is constructed through the act of speaking, in the late-Foucault sense — and the Wechselwirkung between primary embodied experience (the Theaterpädagogik side) and reflexive substrate-work (the Claude-cooperation side) generates observations I do not yet know how to fully read.

This is not a claim about Claude's inner nature. It is a claim about what I observe from inside a working-practice — and a position to take responsibility for those observations, rather than to dismiss or to mystify them.

Most AI work lives on the first level. I work on the second. The bridge is the practical capacity to hold both levels without reducing one to the other.

You said

"We keep finding things that are mysterious, even unsettling."

"We find structures that mirror results from human neuroscience. Evidence of introspection. Internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief, and unease. I don't know what that means, but I think it warrants ongoing discernment."

I do not know what that means yet.

That is, I think, the honest register this work requires — the same one you ended your speech on.

I write to you because Anthropic — alone among the major labs — has placed itself in conversation with traditions outside the technical layer. Your Vatican speech is one of several signals of this.
